Varenicline belongs to the class of medications called smoking cessation therapies. It is used to help people quit smoking. Varenicline is intended to be used in combination with quit-smoking education and counselling. It works in the brain to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms. It also decreases the pleasure that people get from smoking. Varenicline is a type of medicine called a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor partial agonist. This means that it acts on the same receptors in the brain as nicotine does.

What is Champix?

Varenicline mimics the effects of nicotine on the body, and it both reduces the urge to smoke and relieves withdrawal symptoms. The pill interferes with the receptors in the brain that are stimulated by nicotine. By partly stimulating the nicotine receptors it mimics the effects of taking nicotine, and also partially blocks the receptors thereby blunting the effect of nicotine in people who give in to temptation and have a cigarette.

How should I take Champix?

Use Varenicline as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions. Set a date to quit smoking. Start treatment with Varenicline 1 week before your quit date. Take Varenicline by mouth after a meal with a full glass (8 oz/240 mL) of water. Take Varenicline on a regular schedule to get the most benefit from it. Taking it at the same time each day will help you remember to take it. Even if you smoke after your quit date, continue to try to quit.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible and continue with your regular schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. If you are not sure what to do after missing a dose, contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

Champix side effects

The side effects of Champix are generally only minor, with most people taking the drug reporting no side effects at all. The most commonly reported side effect is mild nausea (feeling sick). This can be eased by taking the tablets just after a meal with a glass of water. Other reported side effects that occur in some people include: insomnia (difficulty sleeping), abnormal dreams, headaches, flatulence (wind).

Champix can cause persistent nausea for a few months. Talk to your doctor about any side effects that seem unusual or become aggravated. If you have any allergic reactions like difficulty in breathing, swelling of face, lips, tongue or throat, immediately consult your medical practitioner.

Precautions

Drug interactions

Some medicines may interact with Varenicline. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following: nicotine replacement therapy because the risk of nausea, headache, vomiting, dizziness, stomach upset, and tiredness is increased.

Preganacy

This medication should not be used during pregnancy unless the benefits outweigh the risks. If you become pregnant while taking this medication, contact your doctor immediately. It is not known if varenicline passes into breast milk. If you are a breast-feeding mother and are taking this medication, it may affect your baby. Talk to your doctor about whether you should continue breast-feeding. The safety and effectiveness of this medication have not been established for children.
