Premig

acetylsalicylate lysine + metoclopramide

Premig is used to relieve nausea and vomiting, heartburn, stomach pain and bloating, and a persistent feeling of fullness after meals. This medication is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

What is Premig?

Premig is combination of a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug and an anti-sickness drug. This medicine contains two active ingredients, lysine acetylsalicylate and metoclopramide. Lysine acetylsalicylate is a soluble form of acetylsalicyclic acid, otherwise known as aspirin. Aspirin is a painkiller that belongs to a group of medicines called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It works by blocking the action of a substance in the body called cyclo-oxygenase. During a migraine attack sufferers can often feel sick or vomit. Metoclopramide is used to treat the nausea (feeling sick) and vomiting (being sick) you may get with migraine attacks. Metoclopramide is an antisickness medicine (antiemetic). It works primarily by blocking dopamine receptors that are found in an area of the brain known as the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ). This reduces the sensation of nausea and prevents vomiting.

Before taking Premig

Before taking Premig, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to metoclopramide or any other drugs and also what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking, especially amobarbital (Amytal), insulin, narcotics (pain medications), phenobarbital, sedatives, tranquilizers, herbal medicines and vitamins.

This medicine should not be used if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients. If you feel you have experienced an allergic reaction, stop using this medicine and inform your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

Consult with your doctor if you have or have ever had an adrenal tumor, a seizure disorder, Parkinson's disease, high blood pressure, heart, liver, or kidney disease, a history of mental illness or depression, life long inherited blood diseases, or an intestinal blockage or bleeding.

Always inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or are breast-feeding, before using any medicine. This medicine must not be used during the third trimester of pregnancy, as it may be harmful to the unborn child. It should be used with caution in the first and second trimesters, and only if the benefits to the mother outweigh any possible risks to the baby. This medicine passes into breast milk. Women who are breastfeeding should not use this medicine.

How should I take Premig?

Most patients get relief from headache intensity and are free of nausea or vomiting two hours after a single administration.

For better and faster relief, take Premig as soon as first symptoms appear.

Premig side effects

Although side effects from metoclopramide are not common, they can occur. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away: drowsiness, restlessness, fatigue, constipation, diarrhea.

If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately: involuntary movements of the limbs or eyes; spasm of the neck, face, and jaw muscles; change in mood (depression).

Precautions

Use with caution if you have abnormally heavy menstrual bleeding, asthma, epilepsy, or if you consume large quantities of alcohol. Do not use Premig if you have bleeding disorders.

There is an increased risk of side effects if aspirin is taken with other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). For this reason, aspirin should not be taken with any other NSAID. Also there may be an increased risk of bleeding if aspirin is taken with other 'blood-thinning' (antiplatelet) medicines, or corticosteroids.

If you are having surgery, including dental surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking Premig.

You should know that this drug may make you drowsy. Do not drive a car or operate machinery until you know how this drug affects you. Remember that alcohol can add to the drowsiness caused by this drug.
